Safety Considerations For Removing A Fan

Before you begin the removal process, there are a few safety considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Always shut off the power to the fan at the circuit breaker before starting any work.
  2. Use caution when working with electrical components.
  3. Ensure that you have a sturdy ladder or step stool to safely reach the fan.
  4. If you’re unsure about any aspect of the removal process, it’s best to call a professional.

What Tools Will You Need?

To remove a ceiling fan, you’ll need the following tools:

Let’s take a look at the steps to remove a ceiling fan.

1. Shut Off the Power and Prepare for Removal

Locate the circuit breaker that controls the power to the fan and then flip the switch to the off position.  Next, test the power with a non-contact voltage tester to make sure it’s completely shut off.  Prepare your ladder or step stool and position it securely beneath the fan.

2. Remove Lightbulbs, Light Kit, and Globes

Start by removing any light bulbs or decorative globes from the fan. Carefully unscrew each bulb or globe and set them aside in a safe place.  If your ceiling fan has a light kit attached, you’ll need to remove it next.  Then, look for screws or fasteners holding the light kit in place.

You will use your screwdriver to loosen and remove these screws.  Once the screws are removed, carefully disconnect any electrical wires connecting the light kit to the fan and set the light kit aside.

3. Remove the Fan Blade

Next, you will locate the screws holding the fan blades to the motor housing.  Using your screwdriver, remove these screws, one at a time.  As you remove each screw, hold onto the fan blade to prevent it from falling.  Lastly, once all the screws are removed, carefully lift off each fan blade and set them aside.

Downrod fan needs metal cover off to expose the bracket.

4. Take Off Metal Cover on Downrod Fan

If your ceiling fan is a downrod fan, there may be a metal cover hiding the mounting bracket.  Look for screws or fasteners holding the metal cover in place and use your screwdriver to remove these screws and carefully lift off the cover.

5. Remove Fan Body of Flushmount Fan

For a flushmount fan, the fan body itself may need to be removed.  Look for screws or fasteners attaching the fan body to the mounting bracket.  Use your screwdriver to remove these screws and carefully lift off the fan body.

6.  Last Step – Remove Mounting Bracket

With the fan blades, light kit, and fan body removed, you can now remove the mounting bracket.  Look for screws or fasteners securing the mounting bracket to the ceiling.  Use your screwdriver to remove these screws and carefully lower the mounting bracket.
